“What Are You Into” is hosted by Megan at SortaCrunchy.
On My Nightstand:
Radical Homemakers: Reclaiming Domesticity from a Consumer Culture by Shannon Hayes
Simplicity Parenting by Lisa M. Ross
The Book of Nehemiah (in the Bible)
Want to Read:
Inkspell by Cornelia Funke – just picked this up from the library the other day, but might not start it until we are on our way to Maryland (more on that later…)
Keeping House: The Litany of Everyday Life by Margaret Kim Peterson – on the wishlist 😉
Charlotte Mason’s Original Homeschooling Series by … Charlotte Mason – I know, I know… my son isn’t even six months old yet. Those of you that know me, though, know that I have been fascinated by different theories of education for a long time now. I’ve been doing some reading online about Charlotte Mason and Waldorf theories, but I would really like to get my hands on CM’s entire works. Yes, I’m aware that they’re available to read for free online, but without true internet access at our home, my availability is limited to either downloading it to the Kindle App on my cell phone, or reading it on my phone’s web browser. Being fond of the printed word rather than the printed screen, I’m going to hold out for a physical copy. Someday.
T.V. Show Worth Watching:
Not having cable… or, rather, television stations at all, our television viewing is limited to what we rent via Netflix, and the sports that my parents so kindly allow us to come watch at their house. So… we finished watching Dharma and Greg: Season One this month, and just received the first disc of House, M.D. : Season Seven, which we have been waiting to release on Netflix for quite some time now.
Now if only they would release season six of Bones…
Movies I’ve Seen:
Remember Me … for the fourth time. There has not been a single time in which I did not get chills at the end of this movie. Worth the watch. Don’t read reviews first – for once, it’s a movie in which the spoilers will actually… erm… spoil it. (Profound, I know.) It’s far more powerful if you watch it without knowing the twist at the end, though.
The Adjustment Bureau, aside from being theologically incorrect, was at least original. At least, I had never seen anything like it. It was like… The Matrix meets… well, I’m not sure what it met. The chemistry between Emily Blunt and Matt Damon was interesting, in the least.
Passengers had me guessing the whole time. I began to suspect that there was going to be some sort of twist a la Shutter Island, but didn’t piece together what the twist actually was until pretty close to the end. My husband even found Anne Hathaway bearable enough to watch the entire thing, which is saying something. (I believe he dislikes her on a level only slightly below Olivia Wilde.)
Where the Red Fern Grows. Yep. For the first time. My husband and mother were astounded that I had never seen it, so I added it to the Netflix queue.
In My Ears:
I attended the Syracuse Scottish Games and Celtic Festival this month and had the pleasure of hearing the massed bands, as well as the band Rathkeltair play live. You can hear them play “Nelly’s Reels” and “Pretty Too“, or you can look up their other songs on YouTube as well.
Then there’s Adele. I had never heard of Adele before, but I heard this song on the radio recently and just fell in love with the sound of her voice. I haven’t heard any of her other music yet, but here is “Someone Like You“.
And then, of course, there are the versions of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” that The Common Room introduced me to: one by Ladysmith Black Mambazo, whom I had only ever heard in their duet “Lullaby” with Josh Groban and one by The Muppets (yes, you read that correctly). Speaking of The Muppets, you might as well listen to the “Ringing of the Bells“.
Newest Blog Reads and/or Internet Interest:
No Greater Joy Mom and No Greater Joy Dad – I forget, exactly, how I stumbled upon their post “because it IS our problem” but it really opened my eyes. I mean, I knew about Downs Syndrome children in orphanages overseas. I knew that at a certain age, they are institutionalized and face an almost certain early death. But this just… moved me to tears. And I was again moved to tears when I saw God raise up over $23k in twenty-four hours to help save His darling child and give her a new life with her own family.
Serving His Children – I was introduced to their ministry via The Little Bee Company and their “diaper drops” – they have committed that for every diaper purchased from them, they will be donating a diaper to an orphan in need. Buying new diapers isn’t currently in my budget, but I think that I will be looking into their company when the time comes. Anyway, I’ve started reading the blog of SHC to follow what is happening with their ministry, and printed out an information sheet from their website to tape to the wall to remind me to pray for them…
Last but not least, there is MODG. I don’t agree with her philosophically in, well, probably about 95% of … anything. And as a caution to my readers who might want to avoid it, she uses naughty language. That said, she has some humorous pregnancy and parenting anecdotes. I was introduced to her via a friend’s Facebook link during World Breastfeeding Week. The blog post in question? “10 things about boob feeding that only I’m going to tell you. You, my friend, are welcome.” (Note: she felt the need to include an “illustration” drawn in, erm.. Windows Paint. Think about the title of the post, then contemplate what she may have decided to illustrate. You have been forewarned.)
What I’m Looking Forward to Next Month:
Well, we’re taking off for a week to join my in-laws on the Maryland shore. I’ve only ever been to the ocean once (and, well, I don’t know if it really counts, since it was technically a bay on the ocean, not the ocean itself), so I’m looking forward to that. I’m not entirely sure why, since a) I’m not a strong swimmer, b) I don’t like wearing swimsuits, and c) it’s going to be a looooooong drive down from New York with a six-month-old baby, but… nevertheless, I am optimistic. I’ll report back to you on whether or not that optimism is misplaced. 😉
[…] Am I the only one wondering where September went? This will be my second month participating in SortaCrunchy’s “What Are You Into”. You can see last month’s here. […]
