I experience an unorthodox amount of amusement over calling our Constitution subversive literature. Perhaps because MIAC basically drew that conclusion for me?
Regardless, Mel at A Voice for Moms has some good commentary on how Congress is trampling our wonderfully subversive historical literature Constitution:
In their vote today to tax bonuses retroactively and going forward of private individuals at a rate of 90% they stomped on the following sections of the US Constitution
Bill of Attainder: Article I, Section 9 of the Constitution prohibits Congress from passing Bills of Attainder, laws that punish a single person or specific group of people without affording them a trial, also, generally speaking, prohibits Congress from passing laws that apply retroactively.
Article 1, Section 10 of the Constitution states: “No state shall . . . pass any Law . . .impairing the Obligation of Contracts.
The Due Process Clause of the Fifth Amendment states: “No person shall be . . . deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law.”
Now after reading several articles I do know that there is not complete agreement that Congress has walked on every one of these Rights granted to us in the Constitution, yet I see very clearly that the majority of our federal government no longer remembers that the Constitution is there to protect Americans from an overreaching government.
They have failed to read or remember the history of our country. The founding fathers placed these provisions in our Constitution because King George was doing to the colonists what Congress is now doing to executives or anyone who gets a bonus deemed to big. My question is which group will Congress decide deserves to be punished next? While it is easy to be angry at those who received large bonuses especially because it is being paid with tax payer funds, the idea that Congress can decide which group of Americans are worthy and not worthy of Constitutional protection and then quickly create and pass a bill to punish no matter what our Constitution states infuriates me to no end. Washington has well and truly run amok.
